KNOW YOUR Rx

Have you ever tested your eyes for a vision correction? If so, probably you might have seen the prescription (Rx) that consists of few acronyms and numbers associated with your vision correction! Decrypting and understanding all this information are vital to get the right pair of Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses.

Prescriptions for Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses are dissimilar in values as eyeglass lenses are placed about 12 mms from your eyes whereas contact lenses are placed directly on your eyes. Hence, let’s go for a guided tour to elaborate the readings for both Eyeglass & Contac Lens prescriptions.

Acronyms used in a Prescription (Rx).

Is a Latin term stands for ‘Oculus Dexter’ represents your Right Eye parameters. In some countries it is mentioned as RE (Right Eye) or simply ‘Right’ or ‘R’.

Is a Latin term stands for ‘Oculus Uterque’ which represents parameters for Both of your Eyes. In some countries it is mentioned as BE (Both Eyes)

It stands for ‘Near Vision’ and it indicates the parameters to improve the near vision. It might be a Single-Vison lens prescription or the reading portion of a Bi-Focal/Progressive lens prescriptions.

Is a Latin term stands for ‘Oculus Sinister’ represents your Left Eye parameters. In some countries it is mentioned as LE (Left Eye) or simply ‘Left’ or ‘L’.

It stands for ‘Distance Vision’ and it indicates the parameters to improve the far vision. Mostly, it might be the upper portion of a Bi-Focal/Progressive lens prescriptions or be a Single-Vison lens prescription.

It stands for ‘Pupillary Distance’ or ‘Inter Pupillary Distance’ as sometimes it is symbolized as ‘IPD’. It is the distance between the center of the pupils of the eyes and commonly represented as a single value in millimeters. Occasionally it is split into two values and is measured from the center of the bridge to the center of the pupils of the either eyes and is called ‘Left PD’ and ‘Right PD’.

Prescription (Rx) Values

SPH – Spherical Correction

It corrects Nearsightedness (Myopia) or Farsightedness (Hyperopia) visions. A plus sign (+) indicates you are farsighted, a minus sign (-) indicates you are nearsighted.

CYL – Cylindrical Correction

Combined with the AXIS, the CYL corrects an Astigmatism (a common vision disorder that causes blurred vision due to the irregular shape of cornea). A plus sign (+) indicates you have Myopic Astigmatism(Farsighted Astigmatism), a minus sign (-) indicates you have Hyperopic Astigmatism (Nearsighted Astigmatism).

PRISM

A prismatic power, measured in prism diopter (symbolized as "p.d." or a superscript delta symbol ‘’), prescribed to compensate few eye disorders like double vision. Prism values are always accompanied with a value of ‘Base Direction’ which include Base IN, Base Out, Base UP, Base DOWN. Hardly we find PRISM values in a prescription.
